What are doll Wigs?
A doll Wig is basically the same thing as a Men's Hairpiece or Women's Lace Front Wig. If you wish to create a Wig for a doll, using the same technique as used for creating a Men's Hairpiece or Women's Lace Front Wig applies. You have the choice of using either synthetic hair or real human hair to make your doll Wigs. Usually, synthetic hair is used when making a cheap doll Wig, however, human hair is the preferred doll hair to use. If you just wish to repair your doll, you can order all of the same supplies available for making a Hairpiece or Wig.

What are Hairpieces and Wigs?
If you are looking for a retail custom Wig or a custom Hairpiece - good luck; you'll need it and you'll also need plenty of extra cash too.

Finding retail Wig Salon or Hair Club who claims that they sell custom Hairpieces or Wigs is easy, but finding a shop that really does sell custom Hairpieces or Wigs is nearly impossible. And, when you do find Wig Maker who can make you a custom Hairpiece or Wig, you better be prepared to pay for what you get - QUALITY MERCHANDISE.

First, it should established what the differences are between a custom Wig and a custom Hairpiece.

To start, a Wig or a Hairpiece is simply hair tied to Monofilament Material (very much like Women's Pantyhose or Nylons); or hair fused to a thin Polyurethane Base (something like plastic wrap).

The truth is: Hairpieces (Hair Replacement Systems, Toupees) and Wigs (Ponytails, Braids, Falls, Hair Extensions) are actually the same thing; "They're just hair tied to Foundation Material or hair fused to plastic."

Why do they have different two names for the same thing?
The answer to that question is very simple: Hundreds of years ago "Wigs were Wigs, and wearing one was the fad of the times for both men and women." However, during the last 50 years or longer, wearing a Hairpiece or Wig is no longer a fad, but rather it has become a matter of choice for bald and balding men and women who wish to coverup their baldness. Businesses like the Hair Club for Men calling them Hairpieces for Men; and Women's Wig Shops now call Wigs "Lace Front Wigs" to be exact. You can call them Hairpieces, Toupees, or Wigs, but what they really are is about 1 to 8 ounces of hair tied to netting.

Conclusion: When you purchase a Wig or a Hairpiece from a Hair Club, Wig Salon, Wig Shop, etc., what you normally get, 90 percent or more of the time, are a Factory Made Hairpieces.

What are factory made Hairpieces and Wigs?
Here is what Hair Clubs and Wig Salons advertise: "Our Custom Wigs are actually made to fit your head shape and they look real."

Here's the truth: Factory made Hairpieces and Wigs are not custom made to fit any one persons head in particular. They are created to fit an average size (sometimes small, medium, and large) human head and they are factory made only with the General Public in mind.

Creating factory made Hairpieces and Wigs for Caucasians, Orientals, Blacks, etc. is done by simply using hair that is characteristic to each ethnic group and styling it appropriately. Hairpieces and Wigs are as a rule usually contain more than an average persons hair density and in most cases it is obvious.

What are stock Hairpieces and Wigs?
A stock Hairpiece or Wig is basically one that is Factory Made and the Merchant has them in stock in various styles and colors.

What are custom Hairpieces and Wigs?
A custom made Hairpiece or Wig is one that has to be custom made to match the customer's requirements (size, hair density, hair color, hair length, etc.).

There is a process required to create a custom natural looking Hairpiece or Wigs in order that they are undetectable.

How are custom hand made Hairpieces and Wigs made?
Creating a custom hand made Hairpiece or Wig requires matching several attributes in order that the Hairpiece being made will match perfectly with the consumer:

1. The base or foundation used to make the Hairpiece or Wig must fit the consumer (or the bald or balding area when bald); and it must also conform with the customer's head shape.

2. The hair used to create a Hairpiece or Wig basically determines the quality of the hair system. You have a choice of using synthetic hair or human hair when creating a Hairpiece or Wig. The length of the hair should match the consumer's hair length. The texture of the hair can be accomplished by styling the hair as desired.

3. A Hairpiece or Wig base is made by covering the head with plastic wrap and outlining it to make a temple for the Hairpiece or Wig to be created.

4. A Hairpiece Foundation or Wig Cap is then made out of Monofilament Material to resemble the Hairpiece or Wig outlined template.

5. The monofilament Foundation or Wig Cap is secured to a Wig making (head/Wig) block and hair is ventilated within the outline Foundation or Wig Cap to create the actual Hairpiece or Wig.

6. When the Hairpiece or Wig has been completed, next a tape tab system is applied to the underside edge of the Foundation or Wig Cap. The tape tab system a rubbery skin like urethane material of which is sewn or heat bonded to the Foundation or Wig Cap. The tape tab system is for applying toupee tape or adhesive in order for securing the Hairpiece or Wig for wearing.

7. The last step in completing a Hairpiece or Wig is cutting-it-in to conform with to match with the consumer's hair style. This is really all retail Hair Club's or Wig Shop's knows how to do. They do not really make Hairpieces and Wigs. They are basically hair stylists or barbers and they only know who to cut hair.

Naturally, in order to secure a Hairpiece or Wig to your head for wearing requires either Tape, Adhesive or Hair Snaps or Cips to bond or secure the Hairpiece in place for wearing.

What is the best method for securing a Hairpiece or Wig?
Securing a Hairpiece or Wig for wearing will depend upon each individuals circumstances. Things like your degree of hair loss and how long you wish to wear your Hairpiece or Wig must be considered in order to choose the best method for securing your Hairpiece.

What should you pay for a retail Hairpiece or Wig?
What you pay for a retail Hairpiece or Wig should be based upon the quality of the Hairpiece you decide to purchase. The cost for a Hairpiece or Wig are usually based upon the type of hair that they are made with. The two most common types of hair used to make a Hairpiece or Wig are
synthetic and human hair. There is a variety of synthetic fiber available ranging from poor to high quality, and there is just two levels of human hair, processed and virgin.

Naturally, what you pay for a Hairpiece or Wig made with a poor quality synthetic fiber should be less than what is paid for one made with a high quality synthetic fiber.

This is also true with human hair too, but it should also be noted that Hairpieces and Wigs made with processed hair are not as good in quality as one made with virgin hair.

Processed Human Hair
Processed human hair is chemically stripped of its cuticle and sometimes its color using an acid solution. After being stripped it is then dyed and treated with another chemical to make it appear natural again similar to virgin hair. This process weaken the hair shaft and easily allows the hair to fade quickly as a result of shampooing. The more it is brushed or combed and shampooed the quicker it looses its natural appearance.

Virgin Human Hair
Virgin human hair is processed but it is not always stripped of its cuticle and it is never bleached and dyed as with processed human hair. Because of this the hair shaft remains strong and the color fast. Brushing, combing, and shampooing virgin hair will in time cause damage, but not as quickly as with processed hair.

What does it cost for repair and maintenance services?
Repair and services for maintaining a Hairpiece or Wig range in cost from approximately $50 to $180 an hour (with a minimum of one hour). Repair work refers fixing rips or replacing or building a new tape tab system on a Hairpiece or Wig. Maintenance refers to adding new hair to a system that has damaged hair or hair loss, and or shampooing and styling.

Why does it take so long for retail custom-made Hairpiece or Wig delivery?
Most retail Hairpieces and Wigs are custom made and therefore require being created to a customer's specifications. This process can take from 6 to 8 weeks because most retail Hairpieces and Wigs must be made in countries where minimum wages are very low compared to major countries like the U.S. and UK, etc.

Why are custom hand-made Hairpieces and Wigs better than factory made Hairpieces and Wigs?
The reason custom hand made Hairpieces and Wigs are better than factory made Hairpieces and Wigs relates to whether the Foundation or Wig Cap has been custom designed specially for the client or it was factory made for anyone in general; and when the hair color and hair density are similar with the clients hair color and density.

Factory Made Hairpieces and Wigs
Retail Hairpieces and Wigs are mostly factory machine made, but there are retail Hair Clubs and Wig Salons who do provide hand made factory Hairpieces and Wigs. Naturally, these Hairpieces and Wigs are not made to any one persons specifications. They are basically stock systems that are color match as well as possible to the clients hair and then they are cut and thinned to match the clients hair density as close as possible.

The hand made factory (sweat shops) Hairpieces and Wigs on the other hand are usually made offshore in low wage countries. There are still a few individuals around who do create genuine custom hand made Hairpieces and Wigs from retail establishments around the world. It is these individuals who do create custom hand made Wigs and Hairpiece make the most natural looking Hairpieces and Wigs, however, they do charge from $350 to over $5000 for them.

How hard is it to make a custom hand made Hairpiece or Wig?
The process involved to make your own Custom Hand-made Hairpiece or Wig (using the MHRW Hairpiece Training Kit) is much simpler compared to the old or even the current methods being used to make them today.

The old and current methods required for creating a Hairpiece Foundation or Lace Front Wig Cap template. From the template the Hairpiece Foundation or Wig Cap was or is created. Creating the Hairpiece Foundation or Lace Front Wig Cap required or requires shaping and sewing the Flat Monofiliment Material into a Hairpiece Foundation or Lace Front Wig Cap that fits and conforms to your head perfectly.

The MHRW Hairpiece Foundation or Lace Front Wig Cap are already created and they are shaped to fit the contour of your head perfectly. No sewing requiring creating a Hairpiece Foundation or Lace Front Wig Cap is necessary. You simply position the Hairpiece Foundation or Wig Cap over your head and draw an outline of the Hairpiece or Lace Front Wig you wish to create onto the Hairpiece Foundation or Wig Cap.

Next, you pin the outlined Hairpiece Foundation or Lace Front Wig Cap onto the MHRW Wig Making Head Block and then ventilate hair within the outlined area to create your Hairpiece or Wig.

To prepare the Hairpiece or Wig for wearing you next simply create the tape tab system along the underside edge of the Hairpiece you have just created by brushing the MHRW EasyTAB Compound around the underside edge perimeter of the Hairpiece.

To ready the Hairpiece for wearing; you simply cut away any remaining monofilament material and then to secure the Hairpiece for wearing. Toupee tape, bonding adhesive, or toupee snaps or comb clips may be used for securing your Hairpiece or Wig in place for wearing. Now, you simply comb and style the hair as desired.

That's just three simple steps required to make your own custom Hairpieces or Wigs and all it cost for the hair and Foundation needed to create your Hairpiece is just $20.00 for the Foundation and around $130.00 for the human hair. That's less than $160.00 for the supplies!
