The Hand-made Weft Technique by MHRW INTERNATIONAL

LEARNING THE WEFT TECHNIQUE

Now that you have familiarized yourself with the materials, the tools, and the accessories that are necessary for creating Women's wigs, you must next learn the techniques required for creating them from start to finish. When creating Women's Wigs, you have the option to create your wig using the strand-by-strand ventilating method of tying hair or you can create your wig using weft hair.

Weft hair is hair that has been sewn together into tracks. The tracks are sewn to the wig caps to create various types of women's wigs. You can purchase weft hair at various Wig Supply Shops or you can learn how to creating your own hand-made weft. Below is an inexpensive way to create your own weft hair.

This technique is called the Weft Technique
The Weft technique is the process of weaving hair between strings in order to create Weft strips. Weft strips are used in many ways for creating Men's Hairpieces or Women's Lace Wigs. There are various kinds of women's wigs and each are made a little differently than the other, some are made with just the weft strips and other are made with both weft and single strands of hair at various areas on each wig.

How a wig is created is controlled or altered by its designer and creator. Should you wish the wig to have additional hair, you simply create your weft hair supply so it is as thick as desired. This can be done in two ways; (1) while you are making the Weft, (2) or by doubling the purchased Weft before sewing them together or to the foundation. You are able to control how a wig is being made and once you learn how easy designing and making a wig really is, you'll love making them as much as you enjoy wearing them.

WEFT TECHNIQUE
Weft is made by weaving and tying hair between three strings, next it is sewn along the string area locking the hair in place. For this you will need a set of Weft sticks. Below are easy to follow instructions explaining how Weft sticks are strung.

Stringing Weft Sticks
Using a strong thin non-rotting thread (preferably plastic) when making Weft and follow these instructions.

1.
. Tie String No. 1. to Stick A. (9" from bottom of base) at Position C.
. Tie other end of String No. 1. to Stick B. (11" from bottom of base).

2.
. Tie String No. 2. to Stick A. (9" from bottom of base) at Position C.
. Tie other end of String No. 2. to Stick B. (9" from bottom of base).

3.
. Tie String No. 3. to Stick A. (9" from bottom of base) at Position C.
. Tie other end of String No. 3. to Stick B. (7" from bottom of base).

Weft Sticks and String Set-Up

Weaving Weft Strips
With wefting sticks clamped firmly to edge of a table and strung as instructed on the previous page, and using a strong thread either nylon or plastic. You are now ready to begin weaving hair between the strings strung between the two sticks.

Use the following instructions and steps for guidance:

1.

2.

Remove hair from hair hank (6 to 10 hairs depending on how thick you desire the hair density.) Remember: The more hair that is used the thicker the hair will be on the finished Hairpiece.

Holding hair in left hand, with root ends facing upward.

See WEAVING TECHNIQUE graphic below:

Holding hair behind Strings, reach between Strings 2 and 3 (with forefinger of right hand), then pull hair through, up and over top of String 1.

Reach between Strings 1 and 2 (grasping the hair between fingers), pulling it forward (towards yourself) between Strings 1 and 2.

See WEAVING TECHNIQUE graphic below.

STEPS

3.
Reach between Strings 1 and 2 (grasping hair from behind, pulling it away from you) under String 3, pulling it forward between Strings 1 and 2, and then, back over top of String 1.

 4.
Reach between Strings 1 and 2, (grasping hair), and then, pull it forward between Strings 1 and 2.

 5.
Reach between Strings 1 and 2, pull hair under String 3 (away from you), and then, (up and out towards you) between Strings 1 and 2, and then, over top of String 1.

 6.
Reach between Strings 1 and 2, pull hair forward.

 7.
(From behind) reach forward between Strings 2 and 3, pulling hair back through strings (let string hang freely).

 8

Now, (while holding both ends of the hair) bring them together and tie a tight knot.

The root-ends of the hair should be as short as possible, while still being able to be tied into a knot. The root-ends may be cut off being tied if desired (leave 1/2" of hair remaining).

9.

When finished tying each group of hairs, slide them to the left (on strings) making room for next group of hairs to be tied to strings.

Repeat above process until you have desired Weft strip length.

10.

Once you have weaved and tied enough hair onto strings, slide all of them evenly to center of strings. Cut strings on left or right, tie strings next to end of row of tied hair. Next, cut and tie hair at other end the same way.

To secure weaved hair into position, sew together along knots (using a sewing machine). This will lock the hair into a permanent position keeping it from sliding or bunching-up in one place.

footnote::= Should you decide not to make your own Weft, then Ready-made Weft hair is available for purchased from our Hair Supply web page.
