HAND-MADE WEFT HAIR TECHNIQUE
Creating your own weft hair may be useful for various reasons, however, whatever your reason may be you must first understand that creating your own weft hair supply can be time consuming. To start you will need a minimum supply of human hair that will enable you to create your desired wig.
Weft hair is simply hair that is sewn together into a track system of which secures the root end of the hair together. After the weft has been created it may be sewn to a wig cap in order to create your desired wig or it may be used for doing hair extensions.

Hand-Made Weft Hair Technique
Hand-Made Weft Hair Technique is a simple weaving process where hair is weaved between 3 strings to create your desired weft. The recommended hair length of the hair to be used to create your weft should be a minimum of 8" long and any longer length of your choice desired. Hair color and texture used to create your weft is a matter of personal necessity or choice.
To create your own custom weft will require a Weft Making Rack. Because they are NOT AVAILABLE from retailers, therefore, you will need to make one yourself. See instructions below.
Creating a Weft Making Rack
Weft is made by weaving and securing hair between three strings of which have been strung between two upright wooden sticks. To create your Weft Hair Rack you will need the following wood.
- STICKS: 3/8" round wooden dowel. (Available at Home Depot or Lowes)
- BASE: 3/4" x 6" x 20" flat pine wood.
INSTRUCTIONS: Drill two pilot holes 1/2" deep, centered, 3/4" from each end of BASE for the wooden dowels.
- Glue sticks in pilot holes as straight (90 degree angle) from BASE as possible.
WEFT HAIR TECHNIQUE
Below are easy to follow instructions explaining how Weft sticks are strung.
Stringing Weft Sticks
Using a strong thin non-rotting thread (monofilament or heavy nylon thread) when making weft is recommended.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Tie String No. 1. to Stick A. (9" from bottom of base) at Position C.
Tie other end of String No. 1. to Stick B. (11" from bottom of base).
- Tie String No. 2. to Stick A. (9" from bottom of base) at Position C.
Tie other end of String No. 2. to Stick B. (9" from bottom of base).
- Tie String No. 3. to Stick A. (9" from bottom of base) at Position C.
Tie other end of String No. 3. to Stick B. (7" from bottom of base).

INSTRUCTIONS
- Reach between Strings 1 and 2 (grasping hair from behind, pulling it away from you) under String 3, pulling it forward between Strings 1 and 2, and then, back over top of String 1.
- Reach between Strings 1 and 2, (grasping hair), and then, pull it forward between Strings 1 and 2.
- Reach between Strings 1 and 2, pull hair under String 3 (away from you), and then, (up and out towards you) between Strings 1 and 2, and then, over top of String 1.
- Reach between Strings 1 and 2, pull hair forward.
- (From behind) reach forward between Strings 2 and 3, pulling hair back through strings (let string hang freely).
- Now, (while holding both ends of the hair) bring them together and tie a tight knot. The root-ends of the hair should be as short as possible, while still being able to be tied into a knot. The root-ends may be cut off being tied if desired (leave 1/2" of hair remaining).
- When finished tying each group of hairs, slide them to the left (on strings) making room for next group of hairs to be tied to strings. Repeat previous steps until you have desired Weft strip length.
- Once you have weaved and tied enough hair onto strings, slide all of them evenly to center of strings. Cut strings on left or right, tie strings next to end of row of tied hair. Next, cut and tie hair at other end the same way. To secure weaved hair into position, sew together along knots (using a sewing machine). This will lock the hair into a permanent position keeping it from sliding or bunching-up in one place.
