WIG AND HAIRPIECE HISTORY

Historically, men and women have been experiencing problems with their hair for thousands of years. To resolve their hair issues, they have been wearing wigs and hairpieces (also known as; toupees and wigs) for hundreds of years. In the past, wearing a wig or hairpiece was fashionable, however, today both men and women are wearing them to enhance their appearance. Some women and most men wear them to hide or cover-up their baldness or for other cosmetic or medical reasons. In the past, women's and men's wigs and hairpieces were very much like the wigs and hairpieces of today. Some wigs even contained long hairstyles with curl ringlets, while yet others wore a fashionable ponytail.

How wigs and hairpieces look has changed very little over the years, however, what has changed are the reasons for wearing them. Hundreds of years ago, men wore a hairpiece like men wear a hat today. Men's Hairpieces, in the old days, were more like a women's wigs today. They were made to cover the entire head including the sides and rear areas. Naturally, they were very hot and uncomfortable -- just like most hats are today. Most men never wore their hairpiece while at home relaxing, customarily they only wore them in public places, like at work, or during special occasions.

Women wore wigs in the old days for many of the same reasons they are wearing them today.

U.S. wig and hairpiece merchants of the past, who created men's hairpieces, called themselves wig makers. Today, they call themselves hair technicians. Unlike the wig makers of the past, todays hair technicians don't create the hairpieces because the majority of them don't know how. Furthermore, they can purchase them for far less than they can create them. The reason for this is directly related to current world economics -- foreign country labor rates in some countries is much less than in the United States of America.

Retail Cost for A Custom Men's Hairpiece or Women's Hair System

Bald and balding men and women spend millions annually on custom toupees and hairpieces, front partial's, and rear-crown filler hairpieces; and women's hair systems. Quality custom men's hairpiece or women's hair system can cost up to $9,000 (at various Salon's and Hair Club's) and as a rule, that does not include maintenance. Depending upon how serious you are about looking good, can add an extra $600 to $3,500 for annual maintenance fees on a wig or hairpiece.

The materials needed to create a wig or hairpiece are basically the same. The reason for this is obvious, both wigs and hairpieces are basically hair tied to some type of a lace wig cap or hairpiece foundation. The cost for enough hair and a wig cap or hairpiece foundation to create a wig or hairpiece only costs from $150 to $300. The amount of time required to create a wig will depend upon how you decide to make your wig. Creating a men's hairpiece or women's hair system can take 15 - 35 hours, depending upon the size of the hairpiece or hair system and how fast you are at ventilating hair.

HUMAN HAIR
Today, 100% human hair wigs and hairpieces are very popular, however, synthetic gray hair is commonly blended with the human hair to create wigs and hairpieces for older people. Most custom men's hairpieces are created with color-matched human hair to insure that the hair color matches closely with the customers hair. Naturally, the reason for this is to create natural-looking hairpiece that color-matches with the customers hair.

Most of the retail wigs and hairpieces sold today are made with Asian human hair. Asian hair is naturally dark in color, and therefore, in order to match customer's lighter hair colors it is bleached and died into lighter colors. Naturally, in order to change the hair to a lighter color weakens the hair as a result from bleaching the hair. Also, it is natural for died hair to fade slightly in color each time it is shampooed.

Another problem with Asian hair is the large size of its cuticle. Most Asian people have naturally dark hair and dark colored hair is naturally thicker with heavy cuticles compared to blonde hair that is naturally thin with smaller cuticles. The problem with heavy cuticles is tangling and to eliminate that problem, manufacturer's commonly use an acid to burn away the heavy cuticles. As a result from burning away the cuticles causes the hair shaft to become thinner and weakened on dark hair. Naturally, with the thinner hair shaft size it is common for the hair to easily break from regular brushing, shampooing, and styling.

Most Salons and Hair Clubs encourage their customers to shampoo their wigs and hairpieces frequently. Their advise is financially good for them, but obviously, they just want you to purchase a new wig or hairpiece again, every several months or sooner. You should only brush, shampoo, or style your wig or hairpiece only when necessary and that would depend upon how it looks and how long you've been wearing it during each bonding period.

WIG CAPS & HAIRPIECE FOUNDATIONS
Women's wigs are created using hair and a wig cap. The hair is ventilated to the wig cap to create the wig and then the hair may be styled as desired to create your desired hairstyle. You have the option to create a Regular Wig, Lace Front Wig, or Full Lace Wig of your choice, with any length, color, or desired hair texture. How you create a wig is slightly different than creating a hairpiece or hair system for a bald or balding man or women. With a wig you start at the rear neckline, and after reaching the top section, you ventilate hair from the front hairline to the rear-crown area to complete the wig.

Men's hairpieces and women's hair systems using hair and a read made pre-shaped foundation. The hair is ventilated to the foundation to create the hairpiece or hair system and then the hair is cut to blend with the customer's hair, and then styled as desired to create the desired hairstyle. The hairpiece or hair system being created made with any length, color, or desired hair texture. How you create a hairpiece or hair system for a bald or balding man or women is similar to creating a wig, however, you only need to ventilate hair from the front hairline to the rear-crown area.

CREATING A WOMEN'S WIG
Creating a Regular Wig without a natural front hairline, or a Lace Front Wig with a natural looking front hairline, or Full Lace Wig with a natural looking perimeter hairline are all done basically the same way.

With a Regular Wig you simply ventilating hair to the wig cap to create your desired wig.

With a Lace Front Wig you ventilate hair in a natural density along the front hairline to create a wig that looks like hair growing from skin when finished and secured for wearing.

With a Full Lace Wig you ventilate hair in a natural density along the complete perimeter hairline to create a wig that looks like hair growing from skin when finished and secured for wearing. With this type of with you can style the hair into up-do and ponytail hairstyles.

CREATING A MEN'S HAIRPIECE OR WOMEN'S HAIR SYSTEM
Creating a hairpiece or a women hair system are done basically the same way.

First, the foundation is placed over the bald or balding area.
Next, you outline the foundation to show where you are to ventilate the hair.
Next the outlined foundation is secured to a Wig Block for ventilating and then hair is ventilated within the outlined area (in your desired density and direction) to create the finished hairpiece or hair system.
When finished ventilating the hair within the outlined area; you simply cut and style the hair or remove the hairpiece or hair system from the Wig Block and undercoat the perimeter bonding area.
After the undercoating compound dries, simply cut away the excess foundation material to reveal the finished hairpiece or hair system.
Now you simply secure the hairpiece or hair system on your head and cut and style the hair as desired.

PREPARING A MEN'S HAIRPIECE OR WOMEN'S HAIR SYSTEM FOR WEARING
Preparing a newly created hairpiece or hair system for wearing is easily done by simply brushing our EasyTAB Compound around the perimeter of the piece or system created. When it dries, the undercoated perimeter looks like hair growing from skin. You simply apply your tape or bonding adhesive and secure your hairpiece or hair system for wearing.

ATTACHMENT METHODS
How you secure your hairpiece or hair system is simply a matter of choice. You can choose daily wear bonding with tape, so you can remove your piece or system nightly. This method preserves the hairpiece or hair system so it will have a longer lifeline. Or, you can choose extended wear bonding tape or adhesive that will allow you to wear your hairpiece or hair system for several weeks at a time.

Toupee Tape is a very popular method and easy method of securing a hairpiece or hair system because it is fast, convenient, comfortable, and easy to use and less messy compared to adhesive:

1. You simply remove the protection paper from one side of the two-sided sticky tape and secure it to the existing tape-tab areas on the underside edge of your Hairpiece.
2. Remove the remaining protection paper, then position and secured the Hairpiece to your scalp by simply pressing down firmly at the tape-tab areas.

Toupee Clips and Snaps are two very popular devices that may be used for securing a hairpiece or hair system. However, they are much less comfortable than the toupee tape or adhesive methods. Toupee clips or snaps are sewn along the underside perimeter edge of the hairpiece or hair system. To secure and remove your hairpiece or hair system you simply lift the edge and close each clip or snap to secure or open them to remove the hairpiece or hair system.

Liquid Adhesive attachment method.

To securing your Hairpiece for wearing:
1. Simply brush the liquid adhesive along the underside edge of the foundation where desired.
2. Position the hairpiece as desired.
3. Press (where adhesive was applied) and hold bonding areas for 1 or 2 minutes until adhesive bonds firmly.

To remove hairpiece:
1.
Simply brush or spray adhesive solvent where adhesive was applied.
2. Wait several seconds (until adhesive softens) and remove hairpiece or hair system.

SEMI-PERMANENT BONDING
Semi-permanent Method
of attaching a men's hairpiece or women hair system is available at various Salon's and Hair Club's. They encourage customers to use this attachment method compared to using a less expensive, less damaging temporary attachment methods. For retailers the semi-permanent attachment method is very positive for them, however, for customers it's very negative -- judge for yourself:

A. The Customer:
1.
Customer's are forced to wear their hairpiece or hair system 24 hours a day, without the option of removing it -- when desired. (That means you must wear your hairpiece or hair system while sleeping, during showers, and while swimming or enjoying your favorite sports.)
2. Customer's must have the hairpiece or hair system removed, repaired (when necessary), and reattached every 4 or 5 weeks. (The reason for this is because the hairpiece or hair system is secured to your hair; and as your hair continues growing -- the inevitable happens your hairpiece or hair system becomes looser and looser.)

CAUTION: The thread/wax-glue preparation, used to secure the hairpiece or hair system to your hair, greatly accelerates hair loss along the balding hairline where attached.

B. The Retailer:
1.
Wearing a hairpiece or hair system while sleeping causes enhanced hair damage of which greatly diminishes its longevity compared to the temporary attachment methods.
2. Frequent shampooing of a hairpiece or hair system quickly diminishes its longevity. (It causes human hair too fade and makes synthetic hair brittle, matted, and unmanageable.)
3. Retailers charge from $55 to $125 for regular maintenance (repairing, cleaning, and refitting every 4 or 5 weeks) on a hairpiece or hair system.

Semi-permanent method of attaching a hairpiece or hair system:
1.
A plastic thread is weaved into your hair -- along your bald hairline.
2. A special wax-glue is applied to the hair and thread.
3. The hairpiece or hair system is positioned on to your head.
4. The hairpiece or hair system is sewn to the thread/wax-glue preparation to secure it in place.

CUTTING AND STYLING
Cutting and styling a hairpiece or hair system is not a major problem for hair salon technicians, however, they are licensed barbers or beauticians. Keep in mind that most barbers are only trained to cut hair, and that beauticians are only trained to cut and style hair. Neither are trained how to design and create a hairpiece or hair system . To become a technician at a Salon or Hair Club, they are required to learn everything about designing, fitting, cutting and styling, and even how to add hair to a hairpiece or hair system, however, how good they are at they job is usually poor to bad.

WIG AND HAIRPIECE MAINTENANCE
In order to keep your hairpiece or hair system looking natural periodic maintenance will be required. How often the maintenance is required will be based upon how often the hairpiece or hair system is worn and the environment in which it is worn. When a hairpiece or hair system is semi-permanently attached it is a must to have it serviced every 4 to 5 weeks for both technical and personal hygienic reasons. When secured for wearing on a daily basis; maintenance must be based upon how often worn; its exposure to the elements; and how well it is cared for. Basic Hairpiece maintenance requires regular hair shampooing and conditioning. Since hair is the essence of a natural-looking hairpiece or hair system, it must be cared better than most people maintain their own hair. Excessive shampooing of a hairpiece or hair system causes the hair to fade and break. To remedy this problem it is recommended that you only shampooing a hairpiece or hair system when necessary. Adding new hair to a hairpiece or hair system may be necessary to restore its natural appearance.

Routine maintenance on a semi-permanently attached hairpiece or hair system can cost from $100 to $300 each time it is serviced at a Salon or Hair Club. In the United States and Canada, they commonly charge $125 or more an hour for maintenance on a hairpiece or hair system. Some Salons and Hair Clubs offer maintenance contracts to customer's ranging in price from $100 to $200 monthly. These contracts are usually valid for one year and may include a reduced retail price of a new hairpiece or hair system.

MHRW Recommendation:

"Treat your hairpiece or hair system like you would your own hair and do regular maintenance only when necessary!"

If you CAN AFFORD paying thousands for a hairpiece or hair system and its maintenance, then by all means -- go ahead and give them your money. HOWEVER, if you CANNOT AFFORD paying for maintenance on your hairpiece or hair system, then we strongly recommend that you learn how to make and maintaining your own hairpiece or hair system.
